JasBulletin August/September

Here’s a chunk of the latest news from Jasmine Ann Cooray, including events past, present, and upcoming for the month ahead. I’m looking forward to the Autumn- lots of hot food, scarves, starch, and steamed up glasses….bring on the cosy!

Anyway, that’s quite enough snuggling….care for an update?

Poetry Gigs and News…

The Roundhouse Summer Slam: Heat 2

I was given the opportunity to judge the second heat of the famous Roundhouse Summer Youth Slam, 2008. I competed to second place last year (the recordings on my myspace are partly from that evening) so it was odd but lovely to sit in the judges seat this year. Beautiful work produced by all- really need to step up on my own writing! These writers give me so much hope for the emotional articulacy of the future.

Poets Against Poverty

I was honoured to perform at this fundraiser for the Somali Ramadan Relief effort. The love and urgency in the Somali community in the Khalili Theatre, SOAS, moved me so much I had to take a few days and take stock of all my blessings. An astounding array of powerful and passionate spokenword was shared among all. Props to exhilarating talent Warsan Shire for her involvement in the cause, and also Yusuf Dirie, fellow Sussexer and activist.

Coming up:

Floetics is Back!

Floetics: 10th September

Redroaster Coffee House

St James St

Brighton

8pm, £3.

After the Redroaster Coffee House refurbishment, Floetics is back for the Autumn! Floetics is a performance night I started in my final year at Sussex (Brighton) and is now managed by Visual Culture Missionary and general Genius Luska Mengham, who is also a poet AS WELL. We had a little break, but this month we’re clearing some space for the usual brilliant mix of seasoned and new performers, plus a consistently full and suprising open mic! Can’t wait to get Floetics up and running for the new term, and always a good excuse to keep track on all the joy going on by the coast…..

Workshops…

WRITELondon is now back up and running for the Autumn! Check out it’s new home online at www.writelondon.wordpress.com. The new range of workshops includes deep exploration of Characters and Senses, as well as changing from the usual day workshops to more concise evening workshops. If you’re interested in coming along, or would like to know more, just email me with any queries! Another, even shinier site is in planning, with the help of saintly community organisation Volunteer Action Camden. Check out their site and facilities, they don’t mess about!

I’ll be working with Nick Makoha on a full-day poetry workshop at Ockendon School. Should be a jam-packed day, and an interesting start to the students’ term. I’m not sure they’ll know what hit them.

I’m also working once again with Jacob Sam-La Rose running poetry workshops at Morpeth School, alternately shadowing sessions with Natacha Bryan. I’m looking forward to working with more young people- there’s been a void where they were in the early summer!

And in other news…

Channel 4: The Perfect Vagina

Some of you might have seen me on Channel 4: The Perfect Vagina,

I featured along with some other women, talking about the female body and the cosmetic surgery industry. I have never received so many hilarious text messages in my life- as there was also some filming of Jasmine’s special lady place being plast in caster for the project. The area in question has not let the fame go to her head, but she does do weddings, barmitzvahs and babyshowers for a small fee.

Before the watershed…

On a slightly different note, I’ve also decided to do more work with younger children, and hoping to start volunteering at Kids City when the school term starts. Awaiting approval for that! Stay tuned…..

And lastly- the transition between employed in retail and freelance is not easy! To help ease the ride on the pocket, I’ve just started offering my service as a full-body masseuse again. I’ve been practising intensive full body Swedish Massage for 6 years, and can do it pretty much anywhere there’s a flat surface, so let me know if you’re interested or you know anyone else who is! Good rates, intuitive treatment.

That’s all for now, but will be back soon with happenings, events and the turbulence of life!

Big Love,

Jasmine Ann Cooray
